Board of Education Workshop Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its October 25, 2010 workshop meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Middle School Library, called to order by the president. Seven directors were present, with administrators and contractors seated at the board table, and ten members of the audience in attendance.

A resident asked for an explanation of the change orders tied to the new High School project. The board considered three change orders: NC-97 for brick pavers, PC-19 for plumbing work running a copper water line, and TC-12 for projectors and interactive boards in three chemistry labs. On NC-97, the change order did not pass, with four directors voting against it. The PC-19 and TC-12 change orders passed. The board then approved change orders for high school furniture, covering Delaney & Associates for 3-drawer laterals and P.E.M. Co. for six science stools, on a unanimous vote.

The board approved the 2010-2011 school bus routes and stops, the listing of bus and van drivers from STA of Pennsylvania and W.L. Roenigk, and a series of personnel actions. These included extra-duty pay for several positions, a dishwasher/server at the senior high, a substitute assistant principal, two medical leaves of absence, several substitutes, and an Odyssey of the Mind coordinator. All passed unanimously.

The meeting closed with a discussion of labor negotiations. The superintendent noted a document on the district website detailing negotiations between the professional staff and administration, explaining that rules govern how negotiations are conducted. An administrator outlined the scenarios that would follow a strike, including make-up days and the school year running into June, and agreed to prepare a document explaining these scenarios for the website. The meeting adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
