Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met November 22, 2010, in the Middle School auditorium, called to order by the president, with eight directors present and a resident arriving at 6:17 p.m. The board unanimously approved the MAHA Cantari choral group to perform at Epcot at Disney World April 6–11, 2011. It approved change orders on the new High School project; on the roll call vote, a director favored only EC 36 and opposed the rest, while another director opposed all items. The board unanimously approved budget transfers to the General Fund for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, and accepted a proposal from Sherman Hostetter Auctioneers to dispose of remaining equipment at the old high school, paid from auction proceeds. It accepted a proposal from Pitt Chemical and Sanitary Company for entry-way floor mats, charged to the 2009 Bond Fund.

On personnel, the board approved a 12-week family medical leave for a custodian, and hired a part-time extended day kindergarten teacher at Bon Meade, a long-term substitute English teacher at the high school, a teacher/playground assistant at Bon Meade, two dishwashers/servers at Hyde, a head custodian at Allard, and a substitute. It approved a mentor for the new teacher. The district solicitor reported that contract negotiations were progressing slowly, with a proposal offering an average 2.88% increase and health contributions at 5%; he noted the union had not yet responded, with further talks set for November 23. After public members voiced support for the board and criticism of the strike, the board suspended its no-public-comment policy to allow remarks, then adjourned at 7:15 p.m. before moving into executive session.
