Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met August 27, 2012, called to order by the president, with nine directors present and a reporter in the audience. The board had met in executive session beforehand to discuss settlement appeals, a contract amendment, Act 93, and personnel items. The superintendent reported that the new Moon Area Middle School would open on time for September 5, with a grades 5–8 orientation on September 4.

The board approved renaming the middle school into Moon Area Lower Middle School (grades 5–6) and Moon Area Upper Middle School (grades 7–8). It accepted a proposal from Essential Energy Solutions for an energy use profile study of all district buildings, charged to the General Fund. The board approved a third and final reading of revised policies on student records, smoking and nicotine, bullying and cyberbullying, and school organization, but pulled the two electronic systems usage policies (students and employees) pending more information from PSBA.

On personnel, the board approved a medical leave for a grade 5–8 teacher, hired a long-term kindergarten substitute and a special education teacher at the middle school, approved mentors, extra-duty positions, substitutes, teachers taking a sixth class, PSSA remediation coordinators and facilitators, and winter and spring sports coaches. It accepted the resignations of two cafeteria workers and a high school drama producer.

The board approved a second amendment to the service agreement with Global Management Solutions on a roll call vote of 5 in favor and 4 against, and approved a change order for the middle school project. The meeting adjourned at 9:20 p.m.
