Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met September 17, 2012, in the High School Board Meeting Room, called to order by the president, with eight directors present and several administrators at the table. The board approved the minutes from August 13 and 27, 2012, along with the September financial reports, and approved the bills across the General Fund, bond funds, activities fund, and food service, all on voice votes.

The board approved the third and final reading of policies 216 (Student Records), 218.6 (Smoking, Tobacco & Nicotine), and 802 (School Organization), and posted for first reading policies 105, 108, 200, and 201. It approved the third and final reading of revised policies 250 and 815 on electronic systems usage. The board approved the symphonic band's April 2013 trip to Erie, a new full-day kindergarten curriculum, middle school project change orders, and an SB200 snow blower attachment from Bobcat through the Capital Reserve Fund.

The board took extensive personnel action, approving leaves of absence, accepting several resignations including that of a custodian, appointing Teacher/Playground Assistants at Allard, McCormick, Bon Meade, Brooks, and Hyde, approving tenure for a teacher, hiring substitutes, mentors, remediation coordinators, and fall and winter sports coaches. It also rescinded furlough notices for eight employees.

A resident raised concerns about understaffed special education classes, long van rides, and limited gym. An administrator said the administration was reviewing bus arrival times. The board adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
