Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on October 29, 2012, at 7:03 p.m. in the High School Board Meeting Room, called to order by the president. Eight directors were present—the president, and seven other directors—with one director absent. The board had held an executive session beforehand to discuss personnel.

The board approved all agenda items in a single roll-call vote, moving on a motion by a director and seconded by a director. It approved the second reading of Policy No. 620, Fund Balance, and approved the purchase of a used riding floor scrubber through Pitt Chemical, drawing from the Capital Reserve Fund. It authorized the eighth-grade class trip to Gettysburg and Hershey Park in June 2013, and approved the dance team's November 3 trip to Akron, Ohio, for a "Dance for the Cure" competition, with bus and fees covered by fundraising.

On personnel, the board approved several Brooks Elementary hires, including a dishwasher/server and two teacher/playground assistants, the latter pending clearances. A teacher received a childbearing/FMLA leave from her seventh-grade math post, along with extended sick leave, while another teacher received unpaid leave. Tenure was granted to two teachers, and mentors were approved for the school year. An independent contractor psychologist was approved, as was a remediation facilitator, retroactive to October 9. The board approved salaries, a UPMC Work Partners physician panel, and substitutes across teaching, cafeteria, and nursing roles, many pending clearances. It also appointed winter sports coaches for wrestling, swimming, and boys basketball. Finally, the board approved a tender agreement with The Traveler's Companies for the middle school project, subject to the solicitor's approval. All directors voted in favor on a voice vote, and the board adjourned at 7:08 p.m.
