Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met December 3, 2012, and elected a president and a vice president, with the vice president also serving as temporary president during nominations. The board approved the November 19 minutes and a cluster of financial reports, then authorized payment of the monthly bills across the general fund, bond funds, activities fund, and food service.

The board approved change orders on the middle school project increasing costs, debating individual items including faucet bodies, a flagpole relocation, a sump pump required by the building inspector, a restroom redesign, and a damaged backflow preventer. The vote was a roll call, with the president voting against the sump-pump item. The board approved the 2013 meeting calendar, an updated comprehensive planning committee roster, and authorized transferring the energy-efficiency tax deduction for the high school and middle school projects to Eckles Architecture and Engineering. It also accepted a donation from Eckles Architecture and Engineering to establish architecture and engineering scholarships.

The board voted to withdraw from the Parkway West Alternative Center for Education program at the end of the 2012-13 year, citing rising per-student costs and declining enrollment. A proposed contract amendment with Global Management Systems was tabled. Personnel actions included accepting resignations of an orchestra director and a substitute, approving extra-duty and event-management positions, winter sports coaches, substitutes, and a salary increase, and hiring an assistant principal. The board approved conferences and a MAHS choral field trip to a music conference in Hartford. The president announced two executive sessions covering personnel, litigation, and construction matters. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
