Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met January 14, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the Vice President. Seven directors were present: the Vice President, Tatone, Tranter, Testa, Schisler, Bussard, and Harbaugh. McCurdy and Olszewski were absent. The board approved the December 3, 2012 minutes and the January financial reports, including the treasurer's, investment, and bond fund ledgers, by voice vote. It approved the bills across the general fund, bond funds, activities fund, and food service, also by voice vote.

The board approved field trips for the dance team to a national competition in Virginia Beach, the Academic Games tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a band and orchestra trip to Cedar Point. It accepted a proposal from Hosack, Specht, Muetzel & Wood for audits, a $250 increase, and accepted a PlanCon Part J audit for the high school project capped at $4,800, though this item was tableed. The board approved a general fund budget revision, change orders decreasing the new high school project cost, and change orders increasing the middle school conversion project cost. It approved conferences and a revised meeting schedule moving the December 2013 date.

The board took extensive personnel action, approving building-based substitutes, long-term substitutes, a confidential secretary, and an acting principal at McCormick Elementary during a sabbatical. It approved several leaves of absence, accepted resignations, and approved numerous extra-duty and winter event management positions.

The superintendent reported that the STREAM Academy online school, run through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, would close at the end of the school year due to insufficient enrollment. The board heard a resident raise school security and metal detector concerns, and the superintendent and the board offered to meet with her afterward. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
