Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met February 4, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., chaired by the president, with 5 directors present and 3 directors absent. The superintendent reported on campus safety concerns over unauthorized parking and speeding, congratulated a music teacher on being named Teacher of the Year, and noted the high school ranked 15th of 50 area schools on combined SAT scores at 1,546.

The board approved the dance team field trip to Zanesville, Ohio, and the baseball team's spring training at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, both on voice votes. It approved posting the 2013-14 preliminary budget, which a director noted included a tax increase; the motion passed 4-1, with the director dissenting. The board approved first readings of two new policies allowing facilities naming and commercial advertising on school property and the website to generate revenue.

On personnel, the board accepted several resignations and retirements, approved leaves of absence, and approved extra pay for extra-duty positions, rescuing the Robotics Club sponsorship from an employee and appointing two employees. It appointed an employee as boys and girls volleyball head coach, approved a spring coaching staff, hired an employee as a dishwasher/server, appointed an employee as substitute clerk to the board, and approved several substitutes.

The board approved school donations, including a Target grant for elementary and middle school field trips, conferences, a third amendment to a Global Management Solutions service agreement, and a roofing consultation contract with Florida Consulting, LLC charged to the General Fund. It approved the 2013-14 high school Program of Studies. The meeting adjourned at 7:24 p.m.
