Board of Education Meeting

The March 11, 2013, Moon Area Board of Education meeting, called to order by the president with eight directors present and one director absent, approved the February minutes and a suite of financial reports, then authorized bills across the General Fund, bond funds, activities fund and food service. The board accepted the annual financial report from the district's accountants, approved the 2011-12 final budget transfers, and adopted first readings of policies 123 (interscholastic athletics), 123.1 (concussion management), 201 (admission of students), 800 (records management) and 800 AR, plus a second reading of policy 216 (student records).

The board approved DECA's international competition and Odyssey of the Mind's state tournament, with one director abstaining because his child competed. It authorized the Ira Weiss law office to pursue 2013 residential assessment tax appeals. A contentious segment involved change orders on the middle school construction project: the board tabled GC3-4 from Franjo Construction on a roll-call vote split 6-2, tabled PC-43 from Guy's Mechanical unanimously, and approved GC3-3 and GC3-5. Personnel actions included extra-pay approvals, rescissions, several medical and childbearing leaves, and substitute approvals. The board also approved the 2013-14 school calendar, conference approvals, and a purchase from Integrated Theater Systems, with one director dissenting. Facilities updates covered the middle school demolition schedule and facilities-usage concerns, while the Education Committee reported new middle school courses and an upcoming math-adoption recommendation.
