Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met April 8, 2013, with six directors present (the president presiding) and three absent. After an executive session on litigation and personnel matters, the board approved the March 11 and 25 minutes and the April financial reports, then approved the bills across the General Fund, bond fund, activities fund, and food service.

The board adopted several curriculum materials tied to the PA Common Core transition, including new reading titles, word journals, a Reading A-Z subscription, and the Wilson Fundations reading-intervention program. It approved three policies on third and final reading—Policy 123.1 (concussion management), Policy 201 (admission of students), and Policy 800 (records management) plus its new administration regulation—and accepted student-records Policy 216 for PSBA review.

On construction, the board approved change orders for the middle school project and separately authorized a water-line meter pit from MTMA. Two attempts to approve the main high school entrance work failed: GC3-11 was rejected on a roll-call vote, and the amended GC3-10 also failed, with the president and four other directors voting in favor and two directors against. The board awarded Keystone Purchasing Network bids for art supplies, general supplies, computer supplies, and copy paper, and voted to table the five-year Comcast network-services agreement.

The board approved the high school band and orchestra's All-State field trip, the 2013-2014 middle school program of studies, personnel actions including two resignations and several leaves, and conference travel. It tabled the 2013-14 budget expenditure discussion to a later April meeting and adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
