Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met July 15, 2013, under the president, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the June 10 and 24 minutes and the July financial reports, then approved the bills across the General Fund, 2010 Bond Fund, Activities Fund, and Food Service.

The board authorized participation in the Robert Morris University "First Semester of College in High School" program, approved change orders for the middle school construction project, and approved PlanCon Part J for the high school project for filing with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. It approved the fifth amendment to the Global Management Solutions service agreement, with one director dissenting.

The board adopted 13 policies on third and final reading, including Policy 100 (Strategic Plan) and revised policies 101, 102, 103, 105, and 105.1 through 105.2, and approved 11 student-discipline policies (218 through 218.9) on second reading.

On personnel, the board approved a salary base adjustment for the acting superintendent, hired two high school Business/Computer/Information Technology teachers, approved several long-term substitutes and grade-level coordinators, accepted the resignation of an assistant principal, and approved multiple leaves of absence. It also rescinded the extra pay for a bus monitor position, rescinded a leave request, and rescinded a substitute recommendation.

The board approved the Moon Transportation Authority resolution on a roll-call vote, with one director abstaining after public debate and a failed motion to table. The board announced a feasibility study on possibly closing schools, with a public meeting scheduled for August 14, and heard community comments on both the Moon Transportation Authority resolution and the school-study process.
