Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met August 12, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., chaired by the president, with nine directors present and 32 in the audience. The board approved the July 15 minutes and the August financial report, then approved the monthly bills across the General, Activities, Food Service, 2010 Bond Fund and Capital Project funds. The superintendent flagged a facilities meeting on August 14 and an iPad implementation plan recommending iPads for small-group and differentiated instruction.

The board approved a large personnel package, including an acting principal at Bon Meade Elementary with a prorated raise, several new middle- and high-school teachers, special education teachers at multiple schools, a long-term substitute, several medical and sabbatical leaves, grade-level and leadership changes, extra-duty pay for bus monitors and activities, the resignation of an employee and replacement by an employee, tenure for 40 teachers, increased substitute pay, independent contractors for dental and school psychology services, fall sports coaches, and substitutes.

Other actions authorized participation in Robert Morris University's College in High School program, approved third-grade supplemental reading books, and approved a settlement agreement with a student. One director voted no, citing that the district had acted correctly, while another director abstained; the rest approved. The board approved the third and final reading of revised PSBA discipline policies covering weapons, terroristic threats, bullying and suspension, authorized a contract for catastrophic accident insurance for athletics and extracurriculars, renewed actuarial services with Mockenhaupt Benefits Group for GASB 45 compliance, and authorized a purchase for classroom furniture for Allard Elementary from Kurtz Brothers through the Capital Project Fund. The meeting adjourned at 7:28 p.m.
