Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met August 26, 2013, in the High School Board Meeting Room, called to order by the president. Eight directors were present—Schisler, Testa, Tranter, Tatone, Steele, Olszewski, and Harbaugh, with Bussard absent—alongside five staff members.

The board accepted the resignation of the acting superintendent and principal of Bon Meade Elementary School, effective September 10, 2013. It approved a new acting superintendent effective September 11, 2013, and appointed a new principal of Bon Meade Elementary School effective August 27, 2013. An acting principal at Allard Elementary School was named effective September 3, 2013, replacing the previous principal. An acting assistant principal at the High School was named, replacing the previous principal.

The board approved first reading of revised policies on enrollment, non-resident student eligibility, and commercial advertisement, along with revisions to Section 403(b) and 457(b) plans. It approved change orders for the middle school conversion project reducing the cost, authorized a purchase of a Bobcat angle broom, and authorized the purchase of a used Skyjack scissor lift. The board revised the 2013-2014 calendar, moving the November in-service day to November 5 and the Act 80 day to May 20, 2014.

The board approved staff conferences for two directors at the PASA-PSBA School Leadership Conference. It approved mentors, a special education teacher, teachers teaching sixth classes, and numerous extra-duty assignments across schools. It accepted resignations from several staff members and rescinded an employment offer to a candidate. The board approved fall sports coaches, substitutes, remediation coordinators, and extended sick leave for an employee. The meeting adjourned at 7:19 p.m.
