Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on October 14, 2013, with seven directors present and two absent. The president called the meeting to order, and the board unanimously approved the September 9 and 23 minutes along with the October financial reports by voice vote. It approved the bills across the General, Activities, Food Service, Investment, and Capital Project funds.

The board approved two student field trips: the MAHS Honors Chamber Ensemble's trip to New York City in April 2014 and the Spanish Club's trip to Spain in June 2014, both at no cost to the district. It adopted PSBA-revised policies on third reading, including Policy 104 nondiscrimination and Policy 108 textbook adoption, and approved second readings of Policies 201, 707, and 913.1, and first readings of Policies 117 through 146, including new charter school and migrant student policies. The board approved the 2013-2014 activity groups and bus routes and stops, after an employee raised concerns about empty buses and another employee agreed to review the routes.

Personnel actions included approving UPMC physicians, mentors, and an assistant principal with a salary adjustment. The board accepted the resignation of a coach, approved winter sports coaches, substitutes, remediation facilitators, and numerous extra-duty positions, and granted leaves of absence to four employees.

During public comments, a resident raised a bus-stop safety concern and another resident complained about poor meeting audio. An employee thanked colleagues for his eight years of service and a PSBA recognition award. The board adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
