Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on October 28, 2013, in the High School Board Auditorium, called to order by the president, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the third and final reading of policies 201, 707, 707 AT A, 707 AT B, and 913.1, amending Policy 707 AT A to include volunteer fire departments; all directors voted in favor on a voice vote. It then approved the second reading of a long list of new and revised PSBA policies, including 117 through 146, again by voice vote. The board approved a conference for an employee on Safety Care training, and after discussion of two options presented by JC Pierce, LLC, it approved change orders for the middle school conversion project under Option #2, which adds light fixtures near a crosswalk.

In personnel actions, the board approved a mentor for an employee, extended sick leave for an employee, medical leave for two employees, intermittent medical leave for an employee, and sick leave for an employee. It rescinded and re-approved extra pay for two employees as yearbook co-sponsors, an employee as a bus monitor, and an employee at Hyde Elementary, and approved several substitutes, some pending clearances. The board approved a Dance Team trip to Lake Buena Vista, Florida, at no cost to the district.

The board appointed an employee as district superintendent for a four-year term, contingent on Pennsylvania Department of Education approval, reading a detailed resolution describing the appointee's background as deputy superintendent for Roanoke City Public Schools. The superintendent gave reports on anti-bullying and anti-drug programs, cross-curricular projects, and upcoming National Aviary assemblies. The meeting, which had followed an executive session, adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
