Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on November 11, 2013, under the president, with seven directors present and two absent. The board approved the October minutes and reports, then authorized the monthly bills across five funds. It adopted the 2014-2015 budget timetable and approved a new high school activity group for 2013-2014.

The board took the third and final reading of 27 policies revised or created by PSBA and the district, including new items such as Policy 123.2 on Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Policy 140 on Charter Schools, and Policy 146 on Student Services. It also took the first reading of 22 more policies covering topics from immunization to student withdrawal. A proposed policy to eliminate class rank (Policy 214) was pulled from the agenda for further discussion.

On spending, the board authorized a wireless microphone system for the board meeting room from Accent ESI from the Capital Projects Fund, and approved change orders on the middle school project. It approved contract amendments with Global Management Solutions, Metz Culinary Management, and STA of Pennsylvania related to the Affordable Care Act, and authorized a conference for an athletic director.

Personnel actions included approving winter, spring, and substitute coaching staff, a mentor pair, two childbearing and medical leaves of absence, and a substitute remediation facilitator. In its most notable action, the board adopted an adjudication of an employee under Section 1122 of the Public School Code; all directors voted in favor except a director, who abstained, on a roll call vote.

The superintendent reported on the Tiger Spirit Award, the fall musical, the Moon Preschool program, and student achievements. The meeting closed with board comments and the president's remarks marking her final business meeting, then adjourned at 7:33 p.m.
