Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on November 25, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., with the president moderating. The board welcomed the new superintendent, who delivered an introductory report highlighting the township's ranking as the second-best Pittsburgh suburb for raising a family, the marching band's third-place finish in the state 4A championship, and student achievements including a youth media report and a second-place accounting competition finish.

The board approved a resolution to participate in the AIU joint purchasing program, appointing a regular member and an alternate member of the Joint Purchasing Board. Directors approved the second reading of numerous PSBA policies covering communicable diseases, attendance, health examinations, food allergy management, and student progress reporting. The board authorized a conference for the Title I coordinator and approved a gymnastics field trip to St. Mary's High School in January 2014.

On personnel matters, the board approved extended sick leave for an employee, childrearing leave extension for an employee, and unpaid leave for an employee. An employee received a teacher-on-assignment role as acting principal at Hyde Elementary. Two employees were approved as long-term substitute third-grade teachers. The board approved various extra-duty positions including bus monitors, class sponsors, and art show coordinators across multiple schools, plus numerous substitutes pending clearance review. The board accepted the resignation of an employee and approved a new bus monitor.

The education report from an employee detailed an in-service day featuring EdInsight lesson planning software, Think Central math training, Common Core transition work, and child study process revisions. The board approved a booster group advertising request per Policy 913.2 and adjourned at 7:30 p.m. All votes passed on voice votes.
