Board of Education Meeting - Reorganization Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its reorganization meeting on December 2, 2013, at the High School Board Meeting Room, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The board elected a president, a vice president, a secretary, and a treasurer. Newly elected members were sworn in by a justice. The reorganization adjourned at 7:10 p.m., after which the general meeting commenced with all 9 directors present and 30 audience members.

The superintendent presented the December Tiger Spirit Awards to two students of the Moon Area Middle School, and promoted the "Together for Safe Schools" online contest running through December 13. The board approved the November 11 and 25 minutes along with the December Financial Report, including the treasurer's, investment, board summary, activities fund, and food service reports. It approved the monthly bills, split between the general fund, activities fund, food service, investment account, and capital project fund.

Committee reports covered the Education Committee's follow-up on the Robert Morris University Professional Development School cooperative, the Finance Committee's review of the 2014 meeting schedules and an Essential Energy Solutions report showing energy savings, and the Policy Committee's upcoming discussions on eliminating class rank and the students-and-police policy. The board approved the 2014 meeting calendar and adopted the third and final reading of numerous PSBA and MASD policies covering communicable diseases, attendance, health examinations, and student progress. Personnel actions included accepting a resignation as High School Musical Orchestra Director, approving substitutes, extending a family medical leave, and appointing an acting assistant superintendent for up to 1 year. The board adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
