Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met January 13, 2014, in the High School Board Meeting Room, called to order by the president, with nine directors present. The superintendent's report honored January as Pennsylvania School Board Association Director Recognition Month, awarded the Tiger Spirit Award to two fourth graders, and recognized three coaches and a retiring track coach, who received a clock. He noted the district's placement on the College Board's AP District Honor Roll, district music qualifiers, a raise for WTAE's Project Bundle-Up, and a congressman's visit with students.

The board heard a presentation on the Elementary Capital Improvement Program, discussing building options, potential redistricting, pre-k costs, and scheduled January 27, February 10, and 24 meetings. The board approved the December 2 and December 30 minutes and the January financial reports. It approved the monthly bills across the General Fund, Activities Fund, Food Service, Investment Account, and Capital Project Fund. The board approved the Varsity Baseball team's trip to Orlando, March 19-24, with no anticipated cost.

A security review proposal from National School Safety and Security Services drew debate. An employee's motion to table it for a request-for-proposal process failed on a roll call vote, and the board approved the proposal on a roll call vote, with only one director opposing. The board approved first readings of twelve revised policies, accepted Hosack, Specht, Muetzel & Wood's audit proposals, and approved General Fund budget transfers. It approved conferences, budget revisions, and a personnel package including long-term substitutes, leave of absences, mentors, extra-duty pay, resignations, fall sports coaches, and substitutes. Board comments congratulated athletes and coaches, and the meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
