Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met February 24, 2014, at 7:00 p.m., in the High School Board Meeting Room, with the president presiding and eight directors present; one director was absent. The board took a brief recess for executive session before resuming.

The board authorized administration to file for Act 1 index millage rate exceptions with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. It approved the third and final reading of five policies (217, 220, 226, 233, and 913.2) and the second reading of six policies (236, 238, 239, 240, 247, and 251). It approved the Weiss Burkardt Kramer, LLC resolution for 2014 assessment appeals and approved several conferences, including a trip to Tyler Technologies. The board approved the High School Program of Studies, excluding the Class Rank section.

On personnel, the board approved an acting assistant principal, two long-term substitutes, several leaves, and multiple resignations, including a head coach and a retirement. It approved spring sports coaches and several substitutes. A supplemental item approved a speech language pathologist.

The most contentious business involved creating four new positions. One director voted no on the Director of K-12 Instruction and Curriculum and Director of Human Resources, citing unfunded costs and lack of transparency. After another director called the question, the board approved creating all four positions, with the dissenting director favoring only the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning and Director of Data and Analysis. The board then approved a Director of K-12 Instruction and Curriculum, an Acting Assistant Superintendent, and a Director of Data and Analysis. The board approved the rugby team's trip to Charlotte with no district cost, and adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
