Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on March 24, 2014, called to order by the president, with nine directors present and the superintendent presenting the superintendent's report. The superintendent highlighted the girls gymnastics team's recognition by the state legislature, a challenge team's first-place finish at the America Bowl, and a student's photography finalist selection. A representative of Parkway West Career and Technical Center reported on the center's demographics, career majors, and new collaborative agreements with Community College of Allegheny County and Rosedale Technical Institute, along with planned renovations and new programs.

The board approved the Parkway West 2014-2015 budget, with the district's share increasing. It approved first readings of revised policies on medications, class and decile rank, and transportation recording, with one director voting against the decile rank policy. It approved second readings of revised policies on care of school property and social events. The board approved the Allegheny Intermediate Unit program of services budget, with the district's contribution remaining at the same level. It authorized continued participation in the Western Pennsylvania Electric and Natural Gas Consortiums.

On personnel, the board approved a full-time teaching assignment for an employee, a medical leave for an employee, spring sports event management positions, numerous substitutes, and the abandonment resignation of an employee. The board authorized eliminating nine administrative positions and creating nine new ones, including a Chief Operating and Financial Officer. One director opposed the reorganization, and another director abstained. The board approved a music department field trip to Hershey and a marching band camp at Washington and Jefferson College. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
