Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met April 28, 2014, in the High School Board Room, called to order by the president. Seven directors were present; one director was absent. The superintendent filed no report.

The board approved second reading of revised policies covering sexual harassment reporting, dating violence, and crisis and suicide intervention. It then approved third and final reading of policies on medications and transportation video/audio recording. A separate policy on class and decile rank drew the evening's main debate. A director moved to table Policy 214, citing research that elite colleges have largely abandoned class rank in favor of decile systems, but the motion failed on a roll call vote, with 2 in favor. The board then passed Policy 214 as written, with 2 dissenting.

The board approved 2014-2015 cafeteria prices. The superintendent's office and an employee explained the increases were part of a renewal effort to make the cafeteria self-supporting.

The board accepted a proposal from Hosack, Specht, Muetzel & Wood to audit PlanCon Part J documents for the middle school project, and approved General Fund budget transfers. It authorized several Capital Projects Fund purchases: a Toro Turf Aerator from E. H. Griffith, Bon Meade roof repair from J & D Roofing, a Ford F550 dump truck replacement, and stadium fence replacement from Allegheny Fence.

Personnel actions included approving an employee as Acting Assistant Principal and an employee as a consultant for internal controls. Approval of a consultant for the strategic plan drew one director's objections over cost and qualifications, prompting a recess to executive session. On reconvening, the board approved the consultant, with 2 dissenting. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
