Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met May 12, 2014, in the High School Board Room, called to order by the president. Seven directors were present; two directors were absent. The board approved the April 14 minutes and a set of financial reports, then approved the monthly bills across the General, Activities, Food Service, Investment, and Capital Project funds.

The board adopted the grade configuration recommended by two employees and approved the proposed final 2014-2015 General Fund budget, Version D, which adds an increase and yields a fund balance. It approved a final tax levy raising the real estate rate to 18.4505 mills, enacted the Act 1 homestead-farmstead exclusion, and reappointed PNC Bank as depository. The board adopted IDEA policies and appointed an employee as treasurer, an employee as temporary Open Records Officer and Policy Committee Administrator following the retirement of an employee.

The board approved policies on third and final reading, including new dating-violence and sexual-harassment policies, and gave first reading to student-rights, harassment, electronics, and homeless-student policies. It authorized purchases: floor scrubbers from Rossi Floor Technologies, carpet replacement from Joe Aiello Flooring, auditorium cameras from Combustion Service & Equipment, and lock cylinders from Builders Hardware.

Personnel actions accepted the retirements of two employees, extended an employee's medical leave, approved several Extended School Year staff, and appointed an employee as Director of Human Resources. One director voted no on that appointment over budget concerns. The board approved conferences and heard community members debate the education-center model and school closures before adjourning at 9:28 p.m.
