Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met May 27, 2014, with eight directors present and one absent. The superintendent introduced the Odyssey of the Mind team and congratulated five principals who received Governor's Awards for Excellence, presenting each a proclamation. The board approved the Middle School Program of Studies for 2014-2015, addressing foreign-language needs, realigning Algebra courses, and eliminating an accelerated eighth-grade English language arts course. It approved the Allegheny Intermediate Unit contract for special education services and exonerated the tax collectors from unpaid real estate taxes across multiple years. The board approved second readings of revised policies on surveys, student harassment, and electronics use.

The board awarded numerous bids for 2014-2015 supplies: industrial arts, science, athletic trainer supplies, athletic supplies, and art room supplies. It authorized a purchase of a Mahindra 26XL tractor and a three-year HVAC, DDC, security, and surveillance contract with Combustion Service & Equipment.

On personnel, the board accepted a resignation, approved a medical leave for a custodian, approved a part-time speech-language pathologist for extended school year, and approved gymnastics instructor rates. It denied an extended childrearing leave request from an employee, which passed on a roll call vote with 3 dissenting votes. Following a motion allowing five-minute public comments on non-agenda items, nine residents spoke against the proposed educational center models and school closures, expressing concerns about due diligence, communication, safety, and neighborhood schools. The meeting adjourned at 8:16 p.m.
