Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met June 9, 2014, in the High School Board Room, called to order by the Vice President. Seven directors were present; two directors were absent. After a budget update covering increased high school enrollment and a plan to hire one new teacher in each of four core subjects, the board recessed into executive session from 7:15 to 7:56 p.m.

The board approved the April 28, May 5, and May 12 minutes and a set of June financial reports, then approved the bills across the General, Activities, Food Service, Investment, and Capital Project funds. Committee reports covered the Education Committee's changes to the Middle School course of study, including two-format Algebra I, and legislation updates on school funding, furloughs, and construction reimbursements.

The board approved a German department field trip to Germany and the Czech Republic in 2016, a marching band trip to the University of Pittsburgh–Greensburg in July, and a service agreement with Pace for Pre-K. It authorized the superintendent to designate a Homeless Liaison and appointed the superintendent plus the Title I coordinator and Title II coordinator as electronic signers for PDE egrants. The board approved third-reading policies on surveys, student harassment, and electronic devices, and approved five staff conferences, including three "Getting to Know CMP" workshops. It authorized a contract from Pave-Rite for asphalt sealing and repair.

On personnel, the board accepted resignations from two employees, extended a staff member's leave, accepted a resignation from another employee, and approved extra pay for drama and musical positions plus substitutes. It approved an employee as Allard Elementary principal, a staff member's childbearing leave, and three-year contracts for three employees. These personnel items passed on a roll call vote, 9-2, with one director dissenting on the last two. Community members spoke extensively against the proposed K-2/3-4 school reorganization and for keeping all five elementary schools open. The meeting adjourned at 11:15 p.m.
