Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on October 20, 2014, with seven directors present and two absent. The president called the meeting to order, and the superintendent delivered a report recognizing McCormick Elementary for an Honorable Mention in the 2014 PSBA Educational Publications Contest, four students who earned the Eagle Scout award, several students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship program, and Moon High School for a 2013-14 PIAA Sportsmanship Award.

The board removed agenda item 9.04 regarding Moon Transportation Authority nominations, approved the September 8 minutes and October financial reports, and approved the bills across the General Fund, Activities Fund, Food Service, and Investment Account. The Education Committee reported progress on early reading instruction, a Naviance college-readiness rollout, Classroom Diagnostic Tests, and a planned December report on gifted and guidance services.

The board approved a revised third and fourth grade report card that combines English Language Arts into a single grade, authorized an eighth-grade field trip to Gettysburg and Hershey Park in May 2015, and approved a dual enrollment agreement with Robert Morris University. It also approved a school-to-work transition services contract with McGuire Memorial for a student, an engagement agreement with Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC funded from the Capital Fund, and Resolution 14/15-3 to adopt an underwriter. A contract for Harris School Solutions administrative software was approved.

The board approved conferences for six staff members and accepted the retirement resignation of the clerk effective December 31, 2014. It appointed a Facilities Supervisor, a Confidential Secretary, and a School/Community Relations and Grants Coordinator. Several playground assistant positions at Brooks, Allard, and McCormick Elementary schools were approved, along with a medical leave of absence for a teacher. The board approved substitute teachers and custodians, terminated a non-tenured employee, and adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
