Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on November 10, 2014, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the September 22, October 13, and October 27 minutes along with the November financial reports, and amended the October 27 minutes to reflect that a teacher was approved for a conference she could not attend. It approved bills across the General Fund, Activities Fund, Food Service, and Investment Account, with one director voting against a payment to MM Architects.

The board adopted the free EverFi Ignition digital literacy curriculum for seventh through ninth grades, funded by the National Hockey League and Pittsburgh Penguins, and approved Plancon A and B submissions from MM Architects for the Allard and Brooks elementary capital improvement projects. It approved an Alternative Education Program agreement with the Allegheny County School Special Education District and authorized a special education services analysis with Futures Education. The board also directed the superintendent to review third-party facility usage for 2012-2015, reporting back by January 9, 2015.

On personnel, the board approved the resignation of a bus monitor, hired a new bus monitor to that position, and authorized several leaves of absence including FMLA and medical leaves. It approved multiple remediation and math and English lab facilitators, a teacher teaching a sixth class, and new hires including a general maintenance apprentice, a high school custodian, and two dishwashers. Five substitutes were approved. The board denied Grievance #14-3, with one director again voting against it.

The superintendent shared strong 2014 School Performance Profile results, with four Moon schools ranked among the state's top 50 and Allard Elementary ranked number one in Allegheny County. Committee reports covered the education subcommittee's work on the Robert Morris University "Mooncrest" history project, the MM Architects schematic design presentations for the elementary buildings, and the Moon Transportation Authority's discussion of the Thorn Run Project and 2015 budget. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
