Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met February 23, 2015, in the High School Board Room, with the president presiding. The superintendent reported that five students competed in the regional Governor's JOBS1st STEM competition and that the district won two Chevron grants for Project Lead the Way, a STEM program starting fall 2015 in third and fourth grades. A board member presented a renaming committee recommendation to rename Richard J. Hyde Elementary School to Richard J. Hyde Educational Resource Center.

The board rejected three attempts by two employees: to let the audience speak on non-agenda items, to schedule asbestos abatement at Allard and Brooks for the summer, and to keep the Child Development program in the Program of Studies without discussion. Two other employees clarified their "no" votes meant not removing the class, pending a budget review. After a recess, the board approved the High School Program of Studies with the Child Development class retained for now.

The board approved the Series 2015 bond resolution and accepted Boenning & Scattergood's proposal. It approved the monthly bills, authorized filing Act 1 index millage exceptions with the state, and amended the motion to state the millage increase equals .5869 mills. The board approved a contract with an E-Rate consultant, approved dance team and boys basketball field trips with no district cost, and authorized selling a wrestling mat to the Gladiators Wrestling Club. It approved conferences for two employees and a large personnel package including retirements of four employees, plus substitutes, cafeteria and playground assistants, spring coaches, and sick leave extensions. Finally, the board approved renaming the Hyde facility effective July 1, 2015, authorized purchasing building lettering, and requested that future boards honor the permanent naming. The board accepted the Chevron grant and adjourned at 8:55 pm.
