Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met March 9, 2015, with the president presiding and all nine directors present. The board voted to keep the Child Development course in the high school Program of Studies for 2015-2016, first adding it to the agenda, then approving it on a motion by a director seconded by a director, later amended to state the intent to keep the course permanently. The vote carried on a voice vote with all directors in favor. The board approved the March financial reports, treasurer's report, and the monthly bills across the General, Food Service, and Activity funds.

The board approved PlanCon F items for asbestos abatement and windows/doors prime contracts and re-bidding elevators at Allard Elementary School and Brooks Elementary School from Marotta/Main Architects, along with construction documents for both schools. It approved asbestos abatement daily air monitoring services from PSI for Allard Elementary School, Brooks Elementary School, and Hyde Elementary School, a vote that two directors opposed. The board approved legal services through the RFP process—Andrews and Beard for labor and litigation, Eckert Seamans for capital and bond, Weiss Burkardt Kramer for tax—with categories one and six deferred. It authorized the engagement letter with Maher Duessel for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, and approved additional audit services for the township tax collector audits.

The board approved an AIU agreement for a regional WAN, a letter of agreement with the Port Authority of Allegheny County for graduation parking, and the Parkway West 2015-2016 budget with the estimated share. It funded field trips for the speech and debate team and Odyssey of the Mind, plus conferences for Lindsey and English. Personnel approvals included a long-term science substitute, two retirements, several assistant and clerk hires, an FMLA leave, talent show and club sponsors, and substitutes. Public comment focused on asbestos abatement timing and a dispute over a director's conduct and an Act 1 millage motion. The meeting adjourned at 9:22 p.m.
