Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met May 11, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., in the High School Board Room, with the president presiding. Seven directors were present; the secretary was absent.

The board approved the April 13 minutes and the May financial reports, including the treasurer's and investment reports, on a voice vote. It approved the bills across the General, Activity, and Food Service funds. The board adopted the Act 1 homestead and farmstead exclusion resolution for 2015-2016, the delinquent tax resolution, and the Vision Benefits of America managed vision care contract renewal through June 30, 2017. It authorized the sale of a used genie lift to a resident and approved soliciting bids for the sale of two tons of ground rubber left over from the 2014 turf field.

In personnel actions, the board approved a mentor for an inductee, hired a middle school building-based substitute, approved spring event management staff, approved several substitutes and a nurse (two pending clearances), approved the resignation of an employee, and approved a maternity leave for a speech-language pathologist.

The superintendent recognized the undefeated boys bowling team's WPIBL championship and the girls' section title, and congratulated the principal of McCormick Elementary on her doctorate.

Public comment dominated the latter half. A union vice president complained of broken communication and the denial of the union president's request to speak. Others raised concerns about construction health hazards, the building cost, and disputed test scores. Two directors pressed for a construction update and criticized the lack of transparency, while a director defended the schedule. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
