Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met June 8, 2015, in the High School Board Room, with the president presiding. Directors present were the president, Tranter, Hauser, LaRue, Bussard, Schisler, and Testa (by phone); Tatone and Habaugh were absent.

The board approved the May 11 and May 26 minutes and the June financial reports, then approved the monthly bills across the General, Capital Projects, Enterprise, and Activity funds. The superintendent congratulated two Eagle Scouts and presented the 2015-16 budget.

An elementary principal presented revised classroom schedules featuring tiered intervention time and grade-level team planning; schedules will be voted on at the next meeting. The board heard reports on the Moon Transportation Authority's Thorn Run Interchange work and Parkway West Career Center's revised auto collision exam pass rates and summer camp.

The board rejected a director's motion to retain all five elementary schools rather than open a learning center, 5-2. It approved a performance-based energy savings agreement with McClure Company, overruling a director's amendment barring subcontracting, 6-1. Approvals by voice vote included asbestos abatement at Hyde for American Contracting Enterprises, the EduLink PA Electronic Teacher Evaluation Portal, Safeschools training, and Frontline AppliTrack applicant tracking for 2015-16.

By roll call, 5-2 (Schisler and the president dissenting), the board waived the 15-day review period to purchase a book for 10th grade. It also approved the Linsly Outdoor Center agreement, a piano keyboard donation to a women's shelter, a settlement agreement with a family (Testa dissenting), and conferences. Personnel actions approved the fall 2015 coaches, with Testa and the president dissenting on the assistant girls soccer coach position, and authorized a new Director of Food Service. Public discussion centered on the tier model, the book controversy, and a return to workshop committees. The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
