Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met September 14, 2015, called to order by the Vice President, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the September financial reports and the monthly bills, with two directors voting against. It approved the purchase of 11 HP ProDesk computers for lunch lines, approved UPMC Western Psychiatric for student assistance services, and signed a Prevention Network/CLASS Academy agreement for six alternative-education slots. It also approved an Allegheny Intermediate Unit agreement for a school social worker, a Kennywood picnic agreement for June 20, 2016, and authorization to sell, donate, or scrap outdated equipment.

The board approved a teacher at Moon Academy, a medical leave for a teacher, several resignations, and a substitute director. It approved numerous extra-pay positions, mentors, substitutes, and fall 2015 coaching staff across the district. On conference requests, two directors dissented after debate over costs.

The board directed administration to transfer general-reserve funds to begin math and language arts labs at the middle school, later amending the motion to cover all grade levels until a state budget passes. During public comment, residents raised concerns about a late bus route and construction problems at a school, including water and sewage issues; the superintendent said work should finish September 29, 2015. Board members discussed the non-renewal of a baseball coach, with two directors expressing shock, and debated the return of committee meetings. The meeting adjourned at 9:25 pm.
