Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on November 23, 2015, in the High School Board Room, called to order by the president. Six directors were present; one director was absent. The superintendent congratulated Eagle Scouts and announced that McCormick had been named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School, the district's first. Representatives from Maher Duessel delivered a draft audit report.

After audience comments on agenda item 7.02, the board approved the minutes of prior meetings and approved the monthly bills. A roll vote passed 5–2, with two directors dissenting, amid questions about a moving bill for a resident that exceeded a not-to-exceed figure.

The board spent considerable time on the final accounting of three Elementary Capital Improvement projects, including change orders and a mutual release of claims. An initial motion failed on a roll vote of 5–3, with three directors dissenting. A motion to recess failed 4–4. After a friendly amendment clarifying the release was not universal, the motion passed 6–3, with three directors dissenting.

The board approved the NHL Future Goals Hockey Scholar curriculum for fourth-grade computer classes, renewed the three-year Math Expressions K-6 subscription, accepted a Consolidated Federal Grant Agreement for Title I and Title II programs, and accepted a Make Activities Count grant from McDonald's. It approved the 2016 AIU Joint Purchasing Resolution and authorized the disposal of a piano and keyboard at Brooks Elementary.

On personnel, the board approved fall event staff, winter coaches and event staff, childbearing and maternity leaves of absence, a special education teacher at McCormick, high school department heads and coordinators, remediation facilitators, and substitutes. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
