Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met February 22, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president, with nine directors present and a full administrative contingent seated at the board table. The board approved the monthly bills for the period February 8–19, 2016, covering the General Fund, Activity Fund, Food Service Fund, and 2015 Bond Fund, all directors voting in favor.

The board's decisive action approved reconfiguring elementary programs from the center model to a neighborhood K-4 configuration for 2016-2017, including re-opening Hyde Elementary School. An employee's amendment to split the decision into two separate motions failed 5-3, with three directors voting in favor. The original motion passed except for two directors. A lengthy discussion followed regarding redistricting among the five buildings, with three directors emphasizing the district's history of operating five buildings successfully and a staff member's commitment to a recommendation before the June deadline.

The board modified the 2015-2016 calendar, making March 7 a regular student day as an inclement-weather make-up day, approved a grant for a bottle rocket science project, and accepted the Females in STEM + C program proposal from Robert Morris University. It approved the AIU 3 regional wide area network renewal at a monthly cost effective July 1, 2016, and approved the Moon Area Tigers Rugby Club as an official high school club sport, along with a cost-free field trip to a North Carolina tournament March 4-6.

Personnel approvals included spring event staff, a Breakfast Monitor resignation and replacement, medical and extended sick leaves, a high school building-based substitute at a daily rate, a substitute teacher, and an employee as School/Community Relations Coordinator at a set salary. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
