Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met March 14, 2016, in the High School Board Meeting Room, called to order by the president. Seven directors were present; one director was absent.

The board voted unanimously to authorize the superintendent to initiate proceedings to remove the superintendent and terminate his contract under Section 10-1080 of the Public School Code. It approved the minutes from January 11, 25, 27, and February 8, 2016, and a batch of financial reports, then approved the monthly bills across the General Fund, Activity Fund, Food Service Fund, and 2015 Bond Fund.

The board hired Foreman Program and Construction Managers, Inc., and Cannon Design on an hourly basis to review prior work at Brooks and Allard Elementary Schools, to update the feasibility study required by the PDE, and to provide design and construction management services for the Hyde Elementary K-4 additions and renovations. The board approved the 2016-2017 Parkway West General Operating Budget and Jointure Budget, with the district's estimated shares. It approved the AIU Educational Services Agreement and the 2016-2017 AIU Program of Services Budget, with the district's contribution estimated.

The board voted to close and discontinue the Moon Academy beginning in 2016-2017, to furlough four professional employees effective July 1, 2016, and to require proficient Keystone exam scores with remediation for students who do not earn them. It approved TaylorMade Solutions, LLC, for a contract to repair and replace a crosswalk, and a payment to Junior Achievement. The board voted for a resident as a school board trustee for the Western Region in the Allegheny County health insurance consortium, adopted PSBA Principles for Governance and Leadership, and approved first readings of Policies 301, 302, and 828.

The board approved field trips for the dance team to Indianapolis and the speech and debate teams to Susquehanna University and Sacramento. It approved spring coaching staff, several personnel actions including resignations, leaves, substitutes, and building assistants, a settlement agreement with an employee, and a refund to the Moon Area Rugby Club. Finally, it authorized renaming three elementary schools. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 pm.
