Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met July 18, 2016, with the president presiding. Seven directors were present; one director was absent. The board unanimously approved the minutes from June 13, 23, and 27, 2016, and a cluster of July financial reports. It approved bills from the general, activity, and food service funds, as well as from the general and bond funds.

The board approved Moon Transportation Authority Resolution No. 2016-2, expanding the Thorn Run Transportation District; a tax-dispute resolution; and the establishment of a Moon Cyber Education Program for grades 7-12. It approved guidelines for experience in salary step placement 9-1, with one director dissenting, a Watson Institute service agreement, a Robert Morris University memorandum on sheltering facilities, an Allegheny Intermediate Unit cost estimate for mentoring two ESL teachers, and a WB Mason copy-paper bid. It also approved a conference for an employee and upgraded security cameras via Cabletechs to a cap.

On personnel, the board hired a special education autistic support teacher, a nurse, two kindergarten teachers, an athletic director, and a director of facilities. It created the director of facilities position, accepted resignations from two dishwashers and a custodian, and approved fall sports coaches, numerous independent contractors, and tenure for ten teachers. It also approved two salary increases retroactive to July 1, 2016.

In public comment, a resident asked about bus traffic near the new Walmart. The president announced community meetings on July 21 and August 11 at 7 p.m. to discuss the superintendent's search. The board adjourned at 7:58 p.m.
