Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met August 8, 2016, in the High School Board Meeting Room at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president. Directors present were the president, Scappe, LaRue, Wolowicz, Harper, Zieger, and Bussard; Hauser and Bogatay were absent. The board had met in executive session beforehand on personnel, litigation, and safety matters.

The board approved the August financial reports, including treasurer, investment, board summary, activities, and food service reports. It approved the monthly bills across the general, activity, and capital project funds. The board renewed catastrophe accident insurance from Goodwin & Gruber, accepted settlement offers on two delinquent tax liens, and extended the Aptafund agreement with Harris School Solutions through December 31, 2016. The president criticized the cost as not negotiated, and an employee noted the district could not complete its audit without Aptafund information. The board approved a service agreement with PACE for August 2016 through May 2017.

The board approved a bid from Knepper Press for 4,500 district calendars, with LaRue, Bussard, and Harper voting against. It approved the Kennywood School Picnic for June 19, 2017. Personnel actions included approving a girls volleyball coach, 10 Keystone exam test administrators, 2 family leaves of absence, 10 SmartStart substitutes, accepting a retirement, rescinding a fourth-grade substitute recommendation, approving a second-grade teacher, and approving 2 long-term substitutes. An employee was named Right to Know Officer, and gymnastics coaches were approved.

The board authorized a Letter of Authorization with CannonDesign for Hyde Elementary renovations and authorized a doctor to hire for unfilled positions before August 22. A tentative MEA contract was reached, with board vote scheduled for August 22. The board adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
