Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education, meeting on September 12, 2016, under the president, approved a wide range of business by unanimous roll-call votes. The board adopted the July 18, August 8, and August 22 minutes along with the September financial reports, approved bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Project funds, and endorsed the FY17 Capital Projects Plan dated September 9. It created a new Autistic Support/Life Skills classroom at Bon Meade Elementary, leased a Pitney Bowes postage machine, and authorised a purchase of K-12 ESL materials through National Geographic/Cengage Learning. The board approved revised 2016-17 school bus routes, a revised school calendar shifting the October 10 conference day and turning the March 20 conference day into a half in-service and half clerical day, and two policies on first and final reading (626.1 travel reimbursement and 827 conflict of interest).

In personnel, the board accepted resignations of two dishwashers/servers, a retirement, two medical leaves, approved two dishwasher/server hires, three teachers covering a sixth class, and a large set of extra-duty positions across the elementary schools, middle school, and high school, plus mentors, coaches, substitutes, STA drivers, event workers, and tutoring and safety-care personnel. It also approved administrative salary adjustments and authorised the allocation of potential 2013 middle school construction tax deductions to FranJo Construction under IRS Section 179D.

During non-agenda public comment, residents raised campus access for walkers and drug-testing policy; the board said safety was its top priority and promised to seek alternatives while working with Moon Township police. The president announced a community meeting on September 19 for the superintendent's search and a website survey. The meeting adjourned at 8:27 pm.
