Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on September 26, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., with the president presiding and seven directors present; two directors were absent. The board approved the monthly bills for the period September 15–24, 2016, acknowledged Pennsylvania Department of Education approval of PlanCon project financing and final-cost accounting for the middle school additions and high school new construction, and approved the 2016-2017 professional staff committee.

The board approved an eighth-grade field trip to Gettysburg and Hershey Park in May 2017, adopted first-and-final readings of revised policies including conduct/discipline, child abuse, suicide awareness, investment of district funds, and a broad conflict-of-interest policy, and approved numerous personnel actions covering a dishwasher/server hire, a maternal leave, a coach resignation, extra-duty pay across several schools, fall and winter sports coaching lists, substitutes, department heads and coordinators, and cyber school teachers.

The most notable division came on Policy No. 304.1 – Conflict of Interest, which passed with two directors voting against it, after administration and the board agreed to review whether the policy was overly broad. The board approved a vehicle lift from Station Auto of Coraopolis, but tabled a motion to accept a proposal from Woltz & Wind Ford for a maintenance department truck. The meeting, which opened with a superintendent's report on a new school app and closed with congratulations to the band and boys golf team, adjourned at 7:43 p.m.
