Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met December 5, 2016, under the president, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the November 14 minutes and a cluster of financial reports, then approved the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, Capital Projects, and Capital Reserve funds. It authorized an Act 93 administrative compensation agreement effective July 1, 2016, and approved Skyward, Inc. as the student information system over five years. Other approvals included the 2017-2018 budget timeline, a donation for Hyde Elementary STEM supplies, an E-Rate proposal from Questeq, optional travel accident insurance, a fencing contract with Duquesne Fence for Allard Elementary, and a PSBA Career Gateway superintendent-posting agreement.

The board accepted a Duquesne Fence bid, approved Graham and Graham Security for Hyde Elementary guards pending solicitor review, and approved the 2017 board meeting calendar. It approved first and final readings of revised Policies 619, 622, and Taxable Fringe Benefits, authorized a settlement with Eckles Architecture and Engineering, and approved a varsity gymnastics field trip. Personnel actions included a three-year contract for the Director of Fiscal and School Services, a role for an accounting supervisor, and a daily-rate increase for the interim superintendent. Several staff received leaves, and the board accepted resignations and approved substitutes, mentors, and extra-duty pay. One item, a part-time custodian hire, was tabled.

Two motions drew split votes: on the personnel package, two directors voted against, and on the Eckles settlement, the president voted against. The board appointed an employee to the Moon Transportation Authority for a five-year term beginning January 2017. The meeting closed at 8:58 p.m.
