Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on January 9, 2017, called to order by the president. The board approved a large personnel package in a single roll-call motion, unanimously approving the appointment of an accounting supervisor, an elementary music teacher at Masters Step 2, and a part-time custodian at McCormick Elementary. It accepted the retirement of a maintenance technician effective March 28, 2017, authorized a separation and settlement agreement with an employee, and approved several involuntary transfers, leaves of absence, a mentor assignment, additional compensation for two department heads, and numerous extra-duty and club positions. The board also eliminated two positions—the secretary to the assistant principal and the head kitchen/baker at Hyde Elementary—and created an administrative assistant for athletics plus two satellite-worker positions at Hyde.

The board approved the December minutes and January financial reports, then authorized the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, 2015 Bond, and Capital Reserve funds. It adopted a new kindergarten report card, with one board member voting against, and approved the transition from Math Expressions to Go Math for three years beginning in 2017-2018. The board joined the Western Pennsylvania Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Consortium, with one board member dissenting, and approved district procurement cards, with one board member dissenting. It passed first and final reading of revised policies covering management, various leaves of absence, the Local Taxpayer Bill of Rights, and procurement cards. The superintendent introduced the district's first School Resource Officer, funded by a Safe Schools Grant providing a specific amount for the first year and a specific amount for the second. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
