Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met January 23, 2017, at 7:00 p.m., with the president presiding. Eight directors were present; one director was absent. The board had met in executive session beforehand to discuss personnel and real estate matters.

The board approved the monthly bills across five funds for the period January 9-20, 2017. It approved the December PNC procurement card report and authorized posting of the 2017-2018 preliminary budget. The board approved a borrowing resolution for general obligation bonds, Series A and B 2017, to refund the 2010A bonds, fund part of its unfunded pension liability, and cover issuance costs.

The board approved the high school program of studies for 2017-2018, adopted revised Policies 255, 618, and 625, and approved the Chapter 339 K-12 guidance plan. It approved a memorandum of understanding and transportation plan with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Office of Children, Youth and Families. The board accepted two gifts to establish the Impact Scholarship and the Michael Francis Trella Scholarship.

The board approved several field trips: the symphonic band to Erie on April 19-20, the chorus to Lancaster April 5-8, the American Cultures Club to Washington, D.C. April 28-29 at no cost, and the academic games team to Oglebay, West Virginia. It approved a conference for an employee to the Texas Music Educators Association clinic.

In personnel, the board approved a childbearing leave for an employee, middle school extra-duty pay, department-head compensation, spring and fall coaches and volunteers, a resignation by a school nurse at Brooks and McCormick Elementary, a mentor assignment, STA drivers, and a substitute. It approved a conference for the employee's trip. The board appointed Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, PC as bond counsel and adjourned at 7:55 p.m.

Committee reports covered the Moon Transportation Authority's Thorn Run Interchange Project, with an employee appointed as a new member and bidding possibly delayed to October; the Parkway West Career and Technical Center, which approved its 2017-2018 operating budget and re-opened its HVAC program, and noted the death of a resident; and student activities, which considered a strength-coach proposal and weight-room equipment.
