Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met February 13, 2017, under the president, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the January minutes and a batch of financial reports, then authorized the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Projects funds. It approved the preliminary 2017-2018 General Fund budget, which listed roughly 78.6 million in revenue and appropriations, noting the move was to satisfy Act 1 requirements rather than reflect the final budget.

The board rescinded its November 2015 approval of the final accounting for three elementary capital improvement projects, with directors questioning why it had been signed before the work was complete. It amended the Foreman Group's contract from a fixed cost to an hourly rate capped at a specific amount, to address the uncommissioned HVAC and punch-list issues at Allard Elementary. Other approvals included exonerating the township tax collectors from unpaid 2016 real estate taxes, establishing a PNC Bank depository account for an upcoming bond issue, and signing a memorandum of understanding with the Moon Township Police Department.

The board adopted the 2017-2018 school calendar, added an AP Computer Science Principles course, and approved first-and-final readings of numerous revised policies covering everything from homeless students to tobacco use and sexual harassment. It funded a speech and debate field trip and an orchestra trip. In personnel actions, the board accepted the retirement of an employee and the resignations of two cheerleading coaches, approved spring and fall coaches, several hires, multiple leaves of absence, and eliminated a high school athletic clerk position. The meeting closed with an employee noting a second round of superintendent interviews was scheduled.
