Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met February 27, 2017, in the High School, called to order by the president. Eight directors were present; one director was absent. The meeting opened with public criticism of the former administration and board over the Auditor General's findings of mismanagement, and two speakers called for the resignation of a board member. The board approved motions to add public censure of the board member and of the absent director to the agenda, passing on roll call with the board member dissenting. An administrator reported that the former superintendent has a lawsuit against the board, that independent counsel will represent the board, and that former members may face personal liability.

The board approved bills, authorized filing for Act 1 index millage exceptions, and approved assessment appeals counsel. It approved a purchase for cell phone boosters across 5 buildings from Cabletechs, paid from the 2015 Bond Fund, plus a purchase for 8 stadium cameras and a purchase for license plate cameras shared with Moon Township. It accepted donations to offset negative lunch balances, approved a background-services engagement letter with CSI Corporate Security for superintendent applicants, and approved a two-year therapy-services proposal from Pediatric Therapy Specialists.

The board appointed the Student Wellness Committee, approved "Wonder" for fifth grade, and adopted revised policies on educator misconduct, drug-free workplace, and the employee assistance program. It approved several field trips, conferences, and personnel actions including hires, medical leaves, substitutes, coaches, and STA drivers. Finally, the board approved public censure of both the board member and the absent director for the 2013-2014 through 2015-2016 school years, again passing on roll call with the board member dissenting. The meeting adjourned at 8:57 p.m.
