Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met April 10, 2017, under the president, with eight directors present and one director joining by conference call. The board approved the March 13 and 27 minutes and a suite of financial reports, then authorized the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Projects funds. It added two employees as procurement-card holders and renewed the Vision Benefits of America managed vision care contract through June 30, 2019.

The board approved contracts with the Project Succeed Consortium (Keystone Oaks), Wesley Spectrum for academic mental health services, and retired Policy No. 213, replacing it with a revised Assessment System policy. It also approved first-and-final readings for revised Policies 307, 338.1, 816, 818, 826, and 625. Field trips were authorized for the high school music department to the PMEA All-State Festival in Erie, high school science students to Slippery Rock University, and the boys rugby club to Hollidaysburg at no cost. Four staff conferences were approved, with costs largely covered by providers or Title I funds.

In personnel, the board granted several medical, family, and childrearing leaves, accepted the resignations of a softball coach and a head football coach, approved a dishwasher/server at Brooks Elementary, eliminated the Benefits and Licensure position, and created a Human Resources and Benefits Manager role, filling it with an employee effective July 1. It hired a substitute facilitator and approved 2017-2018 winter-sports and cheerleading coaches. An employee was approved as independent counsel retroactive to January 9, 2017, with the president abstaining. The board created the Moon Area High School Odyssey of the Mind club. A parent sought a purchase to send the team to the state tournament in Michigan; the president cited a weak cash position. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm.
