Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met May 8, 2017, under the president, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board's first action approved Resolution No. 2017-1 terminating the superintendent's contract, effective February 1, 2016, per the independent counsel's findings of neglect, incompetency, and immorality. The president abstained as a witness, and a director voted against, prompting a post-meeting dispute in which the solicitor and the president called the director's earlier claim that no findings existed false. The board then approved the April 10 and 24 minutes and the May financial reports, and authorized the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Projects funds.

The board approved extending the STA pupil transportation contract through June 30, 2023, citing savings, and discussed bus seatbelts, with an STA employee estimating a cost per new bus. Other approvals included a fuel purchase through the Western Pennsylvania Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Consortium, the Act 1 Homestead and Farmstead exclusion for 2017-2018, the FY18 Capital Projects Plan, donations, and a girls' rugby state semifinal trip with no district cost. The board retired Policies 303, 715, and 808.1 and approved first-and-final readings of ten revised policies covering tutoring, home education, immunizations, attendance, hazing, facilities, liability, pest management, cell phones, and food services.

The personnel package approved leaves for seven employees, plus mentors, an STA driver, an event worker, a resignation, extra-duty stipends, substitutes, and maintenance and satellite-worker leaves. The meeting closed with audience remarks on bus passing and a book drive for the Mooncrest Community Center, and board comments praising the golf team and criticizing a director's conduct during the vote before adjourning at 8:37 p.m.
