Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met June 12, 2017, called to order by the president, who noted the board had held an executive session beforehand to discuss real estate and personnel. Directors present were the president, and four other directors; three directors were absent, and another director arrived at 7:13 p.m.

The board approved the minutes from May 8 and 22 and a batch of financial reports, then approved the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Projects funds. It approved a special education settlement agreement, a 2017-2018 service agreement with Pace, an educational support services contract with UPMC's Western Psychiatric Institute, and a Questeq technology-service agreement amendment that the president and a director framed as a cost-reduction measure amid efforts to close a deficit. The board authorized a playground purchase for Brooks Elementary School under COSTARS contract, funded partly by insurance, a grant from a representative's office, and the bond fund after a wind-storm damage. It adopted revised Policy No. 246, School Wellness.

On personnel, the board accepted the retirements of two employees, approved several leaves of absence, and hired a teacher at McCormick Elementary and a special education assistant at Bon Meade Elementary. It approved numerous Extended School Year staff, summer help workers, and fall and winter coaches and volunteers, several pending clearance review.

Reports covered the Education Committee's review of Dibels and Keystone data, the cyber school program, and various grants; the Moon Transportation Authority's Thorn Run Project; and the Student Activities Committee's graduation planning. The meeting closed at 7:30 p.m. after the president congratulated graduates—293 with about 400 scholarships—and the state-championship girls rugby and soccer teams.
