Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its regular meeting on August 14, 2017, called to order by the president, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the July 17 minutes and a batch of August financial reports, then authorized the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, Capital Projects, and Capital Reserve funds.

The board approved several agreements and policy changes: a license agreement with Lincoln Learning Solutions for a learning management system; a day student education agreement with Glade Run Lutheran Services/St. Stephen's Lutheran Academy; a yearly Pressley Ridge services agreement for its Day School for Autism; an AEDY application requiring fees to continue placing students at CLASS Academy and the AIU Community School West; a school-based probation agreement with the Allegheny County Juvenile Court; and revised policy attachments covering drugs and alcohol and internet/computer usage. The board also approved posting digital flyers and news on the district website, amending the motion so paper flyers would be distributed on an as-needed basis rather than discontinued.

On personnel, the board accepted resignations and retirements, approved a separation agreement, awarded tenure to 13 staff members, and hired multiple teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff. It approved extra-duty positions across Bon Meade, McCormick, and the Middle School, plus department heads and coordinators for the 2017-2018 year. A new Pre-K Transition Team Leader extra-duty position was added to the MEA contract.

Following public comments about a vacated elementary band position, the board told the audience that administration would review how best to fill the role and report back, with the superintendent given authority to hire for open positions and formally approve them at the August 28 meeting. The meeting adjourned at 9:02 pm.
