Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met January 8, 2018, called to order by the president, with eight directors present and an employee attending by phone. The board approved the minutes from the December 4 reorganization and business meetings, along with the January financial reports, and approved the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, Capital Projects, and Capital Reserve funds. It approved a proposed Settlement Agreement and Mutual Release, subject to final documentation, and approved Global Wordsmiths for language translation and interpretation services.

The board adopted three revised policies on first and final reading: Policy 218.4 on drugs and alcohol, Policy 218.6 on smoking, tobacco, nicotine and electronic cigarettes, and Policy 819 on suicide awareness, prevention and response. A director voted against the policies, arguing vaping devices should not be classified as drug paraphernalia unless the oils contain controlled substances, though he agreed they have no place on campus. The board approved a speech and debate field trip to Bloomsburg University in March for a purchase, and approved conferences for four employees.

In personnel, the board accepted resignations from three employees, approved leaves of absence for several teachers and staff, approved extra-duty pay for an employee and two department heads, awarded tenure to an employee, approved 2018-19 fall sports coaches, an event worker, and three STA drivers, and approved a dishwasher/server at McCormick Elementary.

Committee reports covered facilities maintenance, the Moon Transportation Authority—where a director was named president—and student activities. Board members discussed early weather-delay notifications and congratulated a retiring police chief, with a captain taking over. The meeting adjourned at 8:12 pm.
