Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on January 22, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. The president called the meeting to order. Nine directors were present. The superintendent, a representative, a representative, and a solicitor were also in attendance. The board held an executive session beforehand regarding personnel and litigation. The superintendent reported on School Director Appreciation Month, and sleep experts spoke regarding later high school start times.

The board added a motion to the agenda approving a settlement in a lawsuit involving the Moon Area School District, granting one step increase on the salary schedule retroactive to July 1, 2017, and one-half step for four named teachers for 2018-2019. The directors unanimously approved the agenda amendment, then voted unanimously in disfavor on the settlement itself, with four directors criticizing the lawsuit as meritless and opportunistic. The solicitor noted the judge required a public vote regardless of outcome. The board removed a conference item, approved the monthly bills, and authorized posting the 2018-2019 preliminary budget. It approved participation in the Allegheny Intermediate Unit joint purchasing program, appointing a representative as regular and a resident as alternate. The board approved a resolution opposing the Education Savings Account voucher plan under Senate Bill 2, and approved settlements with Guy's Mechanical Systems and Lugaila Mechanical Systems. It approved the 2018-2019 high school Program of Studies, a memorandum of understanding with the Moon Education Association on extra pay for extra duty positions, and first-and-final reading of procurement policies 610, 611, and Attachment 626. Personnel actions included a leave of absence for a long-term substitute, the acceptance of a resignation, an extra-duty appointment for an employee, student teacher placements for two individuals, a volunteer lacrosse coach, and STA bus drivers.
